Arthur Mensch, CEO of French AI startup Mistral, predicts a significant shift in artificial intelligence this year, moving beyond large language models to focus on integrated “systems” that combine models with contextual business data.
Speaking with CNBC, Mensch highlighted that while language models are foundational, future AI solutions will revolve around systems designed to act autonomously and perform tasks on behalf of users. “Models are a part of systems, but systems are connected to data, connected to tools, able to actually do things on your behalf, able to act in an agentic way,” he explained.
Mistral: A Rising Star in AI
Founded just two years ago, Mistral has already achieved a valuation of $6 billion, with backing from industry heavyweight Microsoft. Known for its development of open-source language models, the company is considered a strong competitor to OpenAI.
Mensch sees the future of AI in systems that connect language models with contextual business data, creating solutions tailored to specific industry needs. “The focus should shift to systems,” Mensch stated. “It’s about distilling industry expertise into these systems to truly unlock AI’s value.”
The Rise of Autonomous AI Agents
Last year saw a surge in interest around AI “agents” — autonomous systems capable of executing tasks with minimal human intervention. Unlike chatbots such as ChatGPT, these agents are designed to operate in the background, seamlessly integrating with workflows.
Mensch believes these systems will enhance the capabilities of language models by offering more targeted and effective solutions. “Connecting models to relevant contextual data makes them more powerful and specialized for diverse business applications,” he said.
AI Takes Center Stage at Davos 2025
Artificial intelligence has dominated discussions at the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland. The event, which attracts influential leaders from business and politics, has showcased the transformative potential of AI across industries.
On the bustling Davos Promenade, companies like Salesforce and Workday have prominently displayed AI branding, turning cafes, shops, and restaurants into pop-up hubs for discussions on the future of AI.
This growing focus underscores AI’s role as a key driver of innovation and industry transformation in 2025 and beyond.
