Microsoft is testing a new feature for its AI-powered app, Copilot, which is similar to virtual assistants like Siri, Google Assistant, and Alexa. According to a blog post from Microsoft, the feature allows users to trigger a conversation by simply saying, “Hey Copilot!” This feature is currently being tested by Windows Insiders.
Similar voice commands like “Hey Google!”, “Hey Siri!”, and “Alexa!” have been popular for years, and now Microsoft seems to be entering this space with its own version. The company had previously offered a similar feature through Cortana, its former virtual assistant, before it was discontinued in 2014.
How “Hey Copilot” Works
According to the FAQ shared by Microsoft, the “Hey Copilot” feature works through an on-device wake word detector with a 10-second audio buffer. The system doesn’t upload or store audio either locally or in the cloud. Microsoft assures that the wake word detection can function even without an internet connection. However, to use the full Copilot Voice functions, an active internet connection is required as the feature relies on cloud-based processing.
Windows Insiders who want to test the feature will need to enable it manually. Once activated, the “Hey Copilot!” command will trigger a conversation with the AI assistant. It’s worth noting that this update is only available to Windows Insiders who have set English as their display language.
Once activated, a floating microphone icon will appear at the bottom of the screen, accompanied by a chime to indicate that Copilot is actively listening for voice commands.
With this move, Microsoft is aiming to enhance the user experience by introducing a hands-free interface that integrates smoothly into the Windows ecosystem.
