AI has evidently brought a change in how news is consumed and produced. It writes articles, summarizes reports, and produces deepfake videos. But another pertinent question is whether AI can ever possess the aptitude for investigative journalism that is human?
On the one hand, AI has ensured that newsrooms fast-track fact-finding, analyze trend lines, and automate mundane jobs. But are these efficiencies shallow? Journalism is more than creating news; it is about being able to discern stories that demand pursuing, when to stop and dig deeper, and how to effectively suit any power institution.
The bigger challenge remains to set the boundaries. Should newsrooms rely on AI to provide updates for breaking news? Or will AI reports create an over-dependence on data to the detriment of the human narrative? In this regard, how do we avoid AI propelling the very biases that already define their datasets?
This is a much larger transition not only about technology but also a trust issue. So, do we trust AI to tell a full story, or do we believe journalism still needs a human touch? Share your thoughts—will AI build or erase journalism?
